The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India vide its letter No. F.8-89/2016/LII dated 9th January, 2017 has informed that UNESCO had declared 21st February every year as international Mother Language Day to promote the dissemination of mother tongues and fuller awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions throughout the world and to inspire solidarity based on understanding, tolerance and dialogue. Accordingly, it has been decided to celebrate “21st February, 2017 as Matribhasha Diwas” to promote the use of mother tongue. Dept of Humanities and Social Sc. of Maharishi Markandeshwar Uniuversity organized following competitions to depict the cognitive, social, economic and cultural backgrounds of multilingual society:
More than 40 students participated in all the events. Students from varied social and cultural milieu like Bangladesh, Zamia, Haryana, Punjab, Dubai, Congo, Andhra Pradesh and many more got a common platform to delineate their varied backgrounds. A seminar on “Importance of Learning Second Language” was also organized. Prof. Avinash Sharma, Principal, M.M. Engineering College was the Chief Guest on the occasion. He encouraged the students towards learning second language. Dr. Deepak Gupta motivated the students to grow but not to forget their roots. Prof. Tanu Gupta, Coordinator of the program , delivered a talk on Learning English as a Second Language as its being a Lingua Franca. Ms. Prabha Garg, and Ms. Ritu Sharma were also present during the events. Dr. Parnita Dogra and Dr. Shipra Gupta judged the various events.
