M.Tech. | In Civil Engineering

M.Tech Civil engineering programme is designed to have specialization options in Construction Management, Environment Engineering, Structural Engineering, and Transportation Engineering. M.Tech. in Civil Engineering course will enable candidates to show up their spirit and skills of creativity and critical thinking. To do this course successful candidates should have strong analytical skills, creativity skills, ability to evaluate projects, and innovative mind set up to solve the problems with the unique solutions. Civil Engineers basically work on designing, development, maintenance, constructions, and handling projects including roads, buildings, canals, bridges, dams.

Objectives

  • To create ability to analyze simple to complex civil engineering problems and design solutions for the same.
  • To equip the candidate with the art, science and technology of Construction Management, Environment Engineering, Structural engineering, and Transportation Engineering.
  • Inculcate the qualities to be a solution provider in technology / research/ innovation.
  • Awareness towards issues of social importance and the professional & practices like clean technology and green building construction activities.

Outcomes

The Program Specific Outcomes (PSOs) of M.Tech. Civil Engineering are as follows:

  • Post-graduate Civil Engineers will be able to efficiently and scientifically plan, estimate and execute various civil engineering projects.
  • Acquiring the M.Tech. (Civil Engineering) degree equips a student not only a sound engineering knowledge but also very good supervisory and administrative skills.
  • Post-graduation in Civil Engineering will enhance the research capabilities of students to handle scientific problems in civil engineering.

Curriculum

1st Semester
To understand the atmospheric and water chemistry, biochemical effects of heavy metals and the role of microorganisms in biogeochemical cycles and bioremediation process.

Able to understand various processes and operations involved in wastewater treatment and design aspects of various treatment units.

Introduce to the fundamental of fluid flow characteristics, its measurements techniques in various substantial fluid flows and its application in Civil Engineering.

Acquaint with the fluid measurement apparatus and basic fluid mechanics principles through the practical approach.

Able to isolate bacteria and fungi from soil, estimation of the number E-coli bacteria in wastewater, gram staining of lactobacillus bacteria from curd and gram staining of yeast.

2nd Semester

To be able to identify different sources of air pollution, understand their causes, effects and provide practical solutions for air pollution control.

To be able to summarize the various sources of water, noise, thermal pollution and offer technologies for prevention and control.

To be able to characterize, quantify solid waste and design proper solid waste management scheme including the collection, storage, transport and disposal of solid waste.

To be able to characterize physio-chemical parameters of industrial wastes; identify the level of treatment required, suggest treatment units and evaluate the performance of existing effluent treatment plants (ETP’s).

Electives - I

To understand the structural and functional aspects of ecosystem, dynamics of population ecology, significance and conservation strategies of biodiversity.

To understand various mathematical modelling and optimization technique, various theories pertain to decision analysis and economic aspect of system engineering.

To understand the meteorological aspects of atmosphere, atmospheric diffusion of pollutants, their analysis and modeling and the air pollution effects on human health.

Electives - II

To be able to understand issues pertaining to water resource management; use techniques, skills, and modern modeling tools to design water resource system components.

To able to understand groundwater aquifers; flow modeling, methods for groundwater extraction and artificial recharge of groundwater.

To be able to devise engineered systems for waste water treatment based on advanced treatment using microbial activity; and access reliability and effectiveness of decentralized waste water treatment systems.

To be well- versed with the various tools for clean processes- reuse, recycle, recovery, source reduction, raw material substitution, toxic use reduction and process modifications and to offer treatment of industrial effluents.

3rd Semester

To study the basic concepts of EIA and methodologies used for EIA; environmental auditing and various environmental Acts

To study various environmental issues and problems, instrumentation principles and working of instruments used in environmental analysis

To study Eigen value, linear & non-linear equations, finite differences, numerical differentiation & integration, initial & boundary value and variation or dispersion

To study computing techniques and numerical methods used in environmental engineering application and modeling; solute transportation & pipe networking and application of artificial intelligence

Planning and execution of appropriate engineering projects. These investigations may be assigned on an individual or a team basis and in most cases will involve experimental work.

4th Semester

Demonstrate a sound technical knowledge of their selected project topic. Undertake problem identification, design, formulation and solution.

Departmental Electives - III

To study concepts of project formulation, management, costing and appraisal, design and construction process.

To study principles of Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System, application of RS and GIS in Water resources, Land resources, Forestry, Geological application and Urban studies.

To study fundamental concepts of energy and energy conversion systems, energy management strategies and alternate source of energy.

M.Tech specialist’s career opportunities:

  • Post graduate may be Civil Engineering Project Consultants, Land Surveyor, Scientist, Project Manager, Coordinator, Graduate Executive Trainee, and Executive Manager.
  • M.Tech Civil Engineer degree holders can also engage themselves in research as well as Teaching faculty in government and private educational/research Institutes.
  • Post graduate in Civil Engineering may be work as independent consultants.

Note:

  1. The Fee will have to be deposited at the time of Counselling.
  2. University Charges will be extra as per University norms.
  3. Fee once paid shall not be refunded under any circumstances.
  4. There will be an annual increase of 7% in tuition fee.
  5. Students Fund for all the students is Rs.2,000/- p.a.
  6. Life time Alumni Membership fee is Rs. 4,000/-.
  7. Hostel & Transport Charges will be extra.
  8. Students who wish to leave the Institute mid-stream, will have to deposit the fee for the remaining period of the course as per judgement of the Hon'ble Supreme Court in the case of Islamic Academy of Education and others Vs State of Karnataka & PA lnamdar case.
