MDS in Public Health Dentistry | In Dental Sciences

Duration : 3 yrs.

The Department imparts the knowledge of the principles of health promotion and disease prevention among the students. It also helps to achieve knowledge of community-based preventive measures and knowledge of social, cultural and environmental factors which contribute to health. The students will be able to administer Oral Hygiene instructions, topical fluoride therapy and fissure sealants to the patients. The department also imparts education regarding the etiology and prevention of Oral Disease and encourages them by assuring responsibility for their Oral Health. Further, the students are also trained to develop and prepare charts, models, posters and visuals on Oral Health Themes with the intention to educate the mass about the importance of Oral Health.

Programme Objective

  • To act as a primary care provider for individuals and groups of patients. This includes providing emergency and multidisciplinary comprehensive oral health care, directing health promotion and disease prevention activities, and using advanced treatment modalities.
  • To plan and provide multidisciplinary oral health care for a wide variety of patients including patients with special needs.
  • To manage the delivery of oral health care by applying concepts of patient and practice management and quality improvement that are responsive to a dynamic health care environment.
  • To function effectively provide oral health care in the outpatient setting and a hospital setting.
  • To function effectively within interdisciplinary health care teams.
  • To apply scientific principles to the provision of oral health care. This includes using critical thinking, evidenced or outcomes-based clinical decision-making and technology-based information retrieval systems.
  • To utilize the values of professional ethics, lifelong learning, patient-centered care, adaptability, and acceptance of cultural diversity.
  • To understand the oral health needs of communities and engage in community service.

Programme Outcome

  • Identify social, economic, environmental and emotional determinants in a given individual patient or a community for the purpose of planning and executing of Community Oral Health Program.
  • Planning appropriate Community Oral Health Program conducts the program and evaluate at the community level.
  • Develop the planning, implementation, evaluation and administrative skills to carry out successful community Oral Health Programs.
  • To apply ethical and moral standards while carrying out epidemiological research.

  • 2. Select interventions and strategies for the prevention and control of oral diseases and promotion oral health
  • 3. Develop resources, implement, and manage oral health programs for populations.
  • 4.Incorporate ethical standards in oral health programs and activities. Evaluate and monitor dental care delivery systems. Design and understand the use of surveillance systems to monitor oral health
  • 5. Communicate and collaborate with groups and individuals on oral issues. Critique and synthesize scientific literature. Design and conduct health population based studies to answer oral and public health questions.
