M.Sc. Agriculture (Specialization in Entomology)

This M.Sc. degree comes with specialization in Entomology. The course is meant to encourage students to correlate their knowledge of agricultural sciences and knowledge of insects to study and create awareness about best practice of farming. The course content also focuses on imparting knowledge about ways to enhance farm yield, soil management and how to encourage sustainable farming.

Course Objective

  • To train the students with detailed knowledge of Agriculture with specialization in entomology
  • To inculcate awareness amongst students about current problems of farming and how to address them with empathy towards ecology
  • To prepare students to work in the field of agro economic and food processing
  • To train the students about global trends and innovations in farming

Course Outcomes

  • Gaining detailed knowledge about insects and their usage in agriculture
  • Creating awareness about how to maximize the utilization of natural resources
  • Gaining exposure about soil management, fertilizers, livestock’s insect pest, and other economic aspects related to agriculture

Curriculum

1st Semester ( Major Subject )

To impart knowledge on principles, utility and relevance: insect body wall structure, cuticular outgrowths, colouration and special integumentary structures in insects

To learn about scope and importance of insect anatomy and physiology. Structure, modification and physiology of different systems- digestive, circulatory

To study evolutionary history of insects-introduction to phylogeny of insects and major classification of superclass hexapoda – classes – ellipura

To give knowledge on basic concepts of abundance- model vs real world, population growth- basic models – exponential vs logistic models

2nd Semester ( Major Subject )

To learn about tools of pest management and their integration- legislative, cultural, physical and mechanical methods

To impart structure and mode of action of organo-chlorines, organophosphates, carbamates, pyrethroids, tertiary amines

To study insect pests of fibre crops, forages, sugarcane and their management.

2nd Semester ( Minor Subject )

To learn about disease resistance and molecular approach for disease management. Foliage, seed and soil application of chemicals

To study about diseases of Fodder legume crops- berseem, oats, guar, lucerne, cowpea

To teach environmental ethics: Issues and possible solutions, climate change, global warming, acid rain, ozone layer depletion

3rd Semester

Build confidence and knowledge about research among students

4th Semester

Thesis will be submitted by students

Project Based Learning

  • Industry-academic workshops and expert talks to enlighten the students about current trends in agriculture
  • Interactive teaching pedagogy and innovative learning methods to give the students a feel of on-ground activities in farming and entomology
  • Working on enhancing and sharpening the soft skills and communication behaviour of students

Career Opportunities

There is no dearth of jobs in agriculture sector for educated and trained professional who have not only done the degree course but also have gained real life exposure because of practical pedagogy. After completing the course, the students can look for work opportunities in the field of agro research, agro marketing, food management, soil management, Survey Entomology and Forest Entomology. They can choose to do Ph.D. in Agriculture Science after the course as well.

Eligibility Criteria

Duration: 2 yrs.

The candidate should have passed any of the following:

  • Bachelor of Science in Agriculture
  • Bachelor of Science in Horticulture
  • Bachelor of Science in Forestry

from a recognized university with 60% or equivalent marks (50% marks in case of
SC/ST candidates).

Note:

  1. The Fee will have to be deposited at the time of Counselling.
  2. University Charges will be extra as per University norms.
  3. Fee once paid shall not be refunded under any circumstances.
  4. There will be an annual increase of 7% in tuition fee.
  5. Students Fund for all the students is Rs.2,000/- p.a.
  6. Life time Alumni Membership fee is Rs. 4,000/-.
  7. Hostel & Transport Charges will be extra.
  8. Students who wish to leave the Institute mid-stream, will have to deposit the fee for the remaining period of the course as per judgement of the Hon'ble Supreme Court in the case of Islamic Academy of Education and others Vs State of Karnataka & PA lnamdar case.
