Science suggests that crooked teeth, narrow jaws and airways are a modern phenomenon. What has changed in evolution? Is it genetic or epigenetic? 60-70% of children in today’s time are mouth breathers. The spectrum of sleep disordered breathing consists of mouth breathing, noisy breathing and snoring. Any interruptions to the right quality and quantity of sleep can disturb critical processes in the brain which affects the child’s growth, immunity, concentration, performance and productivity. Soft tissue dysfunction is an alteration in the muscular activity of the muscles that affects occlusion, jaw growth, swallowing, sleeping and breathing. Hence there is a need for change in the way we perceive orthodontics. The time has come for pediatric dentistry to develop a new thought process and think out of the box to resolve an arising epidemic of sleep disordered breathing.
