Pradhan Matri Jan Suraksha Yojana was the first Universal Social Security Scheme launched in India. It received huge success and within a year of launch, the gross enrollment stood at 29,650,501 Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojna (PMJJBY).
However, many insurers and banks raised questions on the long-term sustainability of the PMJJBY pertaining to its low premium and a much higher amount of sum assured. Addressing these concerns, the paper analyses the insurer-wise sustainability of the PMJJBY the end of first year of their operation. The same has been done by evaluating the gap between insurer-wise gross premium receipts vs. gross claims settled during the year in the monetary terms. The paper also evaluates the insurer-wise robustness in handling the risk as well as the claims.
