R.K. Narayan is considered to be one of the leading authors of early Indian English literature along with Mulk Raj Anand and Raja Rao. It is indeed not possible to think of the Indian English without these three novelists. Among these three, R. K. Narayan is an artist who has experimented with both western and classical storytelling art. He is placed among the greatest story tellers of modern Indian English. most of his works. He has given a wide gallery of both male and female characters in his writings. His memorable characters are all middle class people. In each of his novel, there is at least one female character who occupies an important place in the story and Rosie is such a female character in his novel theme of the emergence of a new woman became a wide spread and in the early twentieth century. Narayan. Rosie I well as economic, the novel, but is also ranked among well known female characters delineated by R.K. Narayan. In Rosie, Narayan has portrayed a woman who experiences a conflict between a str individual fulfillment and traditional norms. She also becomes a victim of circumstances and conventions but because of her rebellious attitude, she is able to make her own way with a sense of pride and dignity. She belongs to a Devdasi fa educated girl and finally as a professional dancer. This is an illustration of a newly liberated woman in the post independence Indian society. The present paper is an attempt to show how a woman asserts herself by breaking the old shackles of traditions and conventions and finally brings an era of a new woman.
