Abstract. The Gowdy spacetime metric splits the vacuum Einstein field equations into evolution equations, known as Gowdy equations. In this paper, Lie classical method is applied to investigate symmetries of the Gowdy equations, that is a coupled system of nonlinear second order partial differential equations. Symmetries which are obtained in this paper, are further helpful for reducing the coupled system of partial differential equations into ordinary differential equations. Moreover, some new solutions of Gowdy equations are derived from reduced differential equations.
