Cadmium is amongst the toxic heavy metal contaminants released by industries in their effluents. In the present work, cadmium bioremoval ability of microbial consortium which comprised of Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus terreus and Paenibacillus dendritiformis, was studied. Growth conditions were optimized, higher bioremoval percentages were obtained at pH 5 (~93.73%), at 30 0C temperature (~90.41%), while at 120 hrs incubation time, approximately 91.68% cadmium removal was observed. In the presence of glucose and peptone as potential carbon and nitrogen sources, there were removals of 94.66% and 95.46% respectively observed upon the use of microbial consortium. Scanning electron micrographs further displayed the effect of cadmium absorbed by the microbial cells in which the morphological structures of the cells were affected. Study concluded with the recommendation to use the microbial consortium with enhancements of growth conditions for cleaning up of the heavy metal contaminant, cadmium from the environment.
