Promising Star of the future: Geeteshwar Dewan

Geeteshwar Dewan is currently doing internship in the MM Super Speciality Hospital after studying MBBS from MMIMSR. He belongs to a family of doctors, so he has always been surrounded by medicos. Hence, the natural affinity towards this profession was from the very beginning. He chose MM(DU) because the university offers one of the best infrastructure and faculty available in the country for studying something as practical as MBBS, with a good patient load.

People think becoming a doctor is all about reading voluminous books. Well, that’s incomplete information. Books might fetch you good marks in MBBS, but it is the teachers who make you great doctors. The faculty here at MM Institute of Medical Sciences and Research are one of the best teachers available in the region, possibly in the entire country. Because of their varied experience and deep understanding, we get hands on experience which we would have otherwise missed. The term ‘mentor’ misses the essence the word ‘Guru’ brings about. Teachers here are more like ‘Gurus’ because without their blessings, no quantum of books, can teach us the essence of medicine.

Infrastructure has always significant at MM Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, an example of which is the MM Super Speciality Hospital. From diagnostic machines to Operation Theatres, from OPDs to wards and laboratories, all places have the best of equipment. For a medical student, it is no less than a paradise.

MM(DU) offers several different courses, therefore there is a great culmination of educational experiences at the campus. One gets to interact with people from different backgrounds and learn new things. Not only different courses but many students here are from different countries, which talks a lot about the cultural harmony and safety offered here.

Apart from Medicine, Geeteshwar has been actively involved in various co-curricular activities. He is an avid debater, singer, actor, author and a poet. He secured the first position as Best Speaker and Best Team in Euphoria GMCH 32 in 2017; first position as Best Debater in AMMUNATION 2018, first position as Best Speaker and Pointer in IRIS Medical Fest MM(DU) 2018, first position in National Symposium on Why India? Why Not Bharat? at MM(DU) 2018 and second position in Debate at UNIVERSUMM MM(DU) 2017. He also won prizes in singing and poetry competitions. He also co-authored and acted in a play on Drug De-addiction on the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in 2019 in front of eminent personalities of Haryana Police.

He feels grateful to the university for nurturing a passion for public speaking and debating since school days. However, winning the second prize in the Debate held at UNIVERSUMM 2017 has been the most special memory. He shares, “MM(DU) provided the stage to excel in all fields – be it your passion or your education. I have been able to learn the best of what is there to offer in medicine and at the same time participated in co curricular activities which I have mentioned before. My idols are my parents, who have provided the right kind of motivation and upbringing from the start. I hope to inculcate the right values from them for my lifetime.”
